Vietnamese, Indian defense ministers join talks in Hanoi

Vietnamese Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang and his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh discussed measures to boost bilateral defense cooperation during their talks in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The talks took place within the framework of Minister Singh’s official visit to Vietnam from June 7 to 10.

During their dialogue, Minister Giang underlined the significance of the visit as it takes place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam-India diplomatic relation.

The trip also contributes to promoting the friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and the two ministries in particular, he added.

Singh affirmed that India considers Vietnam as a key partner in its Act East Policy, expressing his hope that the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries will continue to thrive and expand to all fields.

The two sides agreed on strengthening bilateral collaboration, fully and effectively implementing signed agreements, and increasing contacts and exchanges of delegations at all levels.

Both sides will maintain and enhance the efficiency of dialogue and consultation mechanisms, especially the defense policy consultation at the deputy defense minister level, while fostering partnership in personnel training and cooperation among armed forces.

The two countries will boost coordination in United Nations peacekeeping operations and strengthen coordination and consultations at multilateral forums.

Regarding regional and global issues, the two ministers consented on the significance of maintaining peace and stability in the East Vietnam Sea, the settlement of disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea (DOC), and expediting negotiations to reach a Code of Conduct (COC) for the maritime area.

Following the talks, they signed a statement on a Vietnam-India defense partnership joint vision toward 2030 and a memorandum of understanding on mutual support in logistics between the two ministries.
