A 900-meter cable car route to Sam Mountain in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta was officially inaugurated on Saturday after five years of construction and a one-year test run.

The inauguration was organized by MGA Vietnam JSC and the People’s Committee in Chau Doc City, An Giang Province.

Stretching 900 meters, the Sam Mountain cable car routes has 37 cabins, each of which can carry up to eight people.

The system operates around the clock to serve visitors and worshippers at the Sam Mountain National Tourist Area.

The modern cable car system was installed by Austria’s Doppelmayr Company, one of the world’s leading cable car suppliers.

The cable car helps shorten the time it takes to reach the top of Sam Mountain as well as alleviate overcrowding at the tourist area.

With the height of 280 meters above sea level, Sam Mountain is among the popular tourist destinations of the Mekong Delta and Vietnam in general.

It is home to several tourist hot spots including Ba Chua Xu Temple, Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb, Tay An Pagoda, and Phuoc Dien Pagoda.

The Sam Mountain cable car has served about 5,000 to 7,000 people on a daily basis since the beginning of this month.

The official inauguration of the cable car is an important condition for the tourism sector in An Giang to develop, Le Van Phuoc, vice-chairman of the provincial administration, said at the ceremony.

The construction of the cable car system began in 2016.

The system was put into operation on a trial basis in 2021.

A round trip ticket costs VND90,000 (US$3.9) for adults and VND50,000 ($2.2) for children.
