One more passenger terminal is planned to be built at Noi Bai International Airport by 2030.

The MoT has signed a statement seeking the prime minister’s approval for airport development for the 2021-2030 period. The latest draft plan has taken into account the government’s guidance noted at December’s regular meeting.

Along with this, the MoT proposes focusing on building and upgrading of major airports in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, gradually upgrading these to ensure effective exploitation of the existing 22 airports, along with six new airports to raise the total number of airports in Vietnam to 28. The total passenger capacity would then reach about 283 million passengers.

By 2050, the MoT proposes to establish 31 airports in total, including 14 international airports and 17 local airports.

Of the 28 airports by 2030, Vietnam would have 14 international airports, such as Van Don, Cat Bi, Noi Bai, Danang, Phu Bai, Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho and Phu Quoc, along with 14 local airports.

During the period, the MoT proposed retaining the plan of Haiphong international airport in the city’s Tien Lang district.

Simultaneously, the MoT considers supplementing the national airport scheme, with additions to islands like Ly Son and Phu Quy which see growing demand for socioeconomic development.

By 2050, the MoT proposes to establish 31 airports in total, including 14 international airports and 17 local airports.

According to estimates, the total land area serving the national airport system would cover more than 20,000 hectares. Total proposed capital would amount to around $17.39 million, equal to 22 per cent of the transport sector’s total investment capital volume, to be coming from the state budget and other legitimate sources.
