A woman has been sentenced to death for transporting more than 4.5 kilograms of narcotics in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court conducted the trial of Thai Phuong Thuy, 29, and Nguyen Than Thao Nguyen, 30, on Monday.
Thuy was handed capital punishment for transporting narcotics.
Nguyen was also convicted of a similar offense but was given a life sentence because her child is under 36 months old.
Police officers raided Thuy and Nguyen’s apartment in District 7 on October 9, 2020 and found multiple plastic bags containing drugs, according to the indictment.
An assessment later showed that the drugs included over 995 grams of ketamine and more than 3.5 kilograms of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.
Thuy and Nguyen said they had met a man named Den in 2017.
In August 2020, Den asked the two women to help him receive narcotics from a source, store the drugs, and deliver them to his buyers.
Den promised to pay Thuy and Nguyen VND5 million (US$220).
In October the same year, the two women received the drugs from an unidentified man and kept them at their apartment.
They were caught red-handed by police before they could get paid.
Thuy added that this was her first time taking part in the illegal operation.
Officers were unable to identify and arrest Den as Thuy and Nguyen did not have much information about him.
