Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has expressed concern over fragile security and stability in the East Vietnam Sea during the ongoing 35th ASEAN Summit in Thailand.

PM Phuc along with other ASEAN leaders and the ASEAN Secretary General attended a plenary session on Saturday, as part of the 35th ASEAN Summit taking place in Bangkok from October 31 to November 4.

ASEAN, short for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a political and economic organization whose members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

During the meeting, the leaders also exchanged views on the future of ASEAN under the theme ‘Advancing Partnership for Sustainability’ to enhance sustainability within the region in all dimensions.

Addressing the event, PM Phuc highlighted the significance of upholding ASEAN solidarity and unity and building an open, transparent, and rules-based regional architecture.

The premier asked other ASEAN member countries to assist Vietnam in successfully fulfilling its role as ASEAN Chair in 2020, thus contributing to building the ASEAN Community with sustainable development and extensive partnership.

Regarding the situation in the East Vietnam Sea, he reiterated the importance of maintaining an international legal order for peace and stability in the maritime area.

Serious incidents that recently occurred in the waters of the region and Vietnam have given ASEAN great lessons, according to the Vietnamese leader.

PM Phuc expressed his concern over fragile security and stability in the maritime area, before calling for serious commitments and responsibility from all countries in the region to make sure that such incidents will not repeat.

Hanoi resolutely and consistently respects international law regarding international relations and issues in the East Vietnam Sea, he affirmed.

The Southeast Asian country hopes to make the East Vietnam Sea a maritime area of peace, stability, and sustainable development, Phuc added.
